Communism, Socialism, Terrorism, & Liberalism vs Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness

This is a topic that will probably frequent this blog. So I will create a foundation here for later discussions.

In the last post The Role of Government I discussed that the 3 major roles should be the protection of freedom and liberties, the protection of life, and the protection of property. I didn't mention, and this is probably because it seems so obvious to me at times, that in order for the government to perform these tasks it must first and foremost protect its sovereignty at all costs. In other words a few fundamental roles of any government should be:
  1. National Defense (protects sovereignty, life, property, and freedoms)
  2. Law and Order (Supreme Law in the US is the Constitution which guides and provides the principles needed for a foundation, protects life, property, and freedoms)

Welfare is not the responsibility of the government. By God's law we the people are held accountable for that as individuals. We must not delegate welfare to the State. King Mosiah in his address taught plainly that even persons in positions of power must serve one another. In Mosiah 2:14:

And even I, myself, have labored with mine own hands that I might serve you, and that ye should not be laden with taxes, and that there should nothing come upon you which was grievous to be borne—and of all these things which I have spoken, ye yourselves are witnesses this day.

If only our own politicians had these standards today.

In contrast to liberty we have terrorism. Radical groups of people for various reasons that call America and its citizens evil for its founding ideals. They threaten our country, our families, and our freedoms. These are fanatical groups and individuals that cannot be reasoned with, they believe that they are in the right. Should we sit idly by as some in Washington feel we should cower like so much of Europe has already? Should we disarm and disband? Should we fall back from the front and retreat? What would the message be to the terrorists and the rest of the world if we did? George Washington stated:

"There is a rank due the United States among the nations that will be totally lost by the reputation of weakness. If we would avoid insult we must be able to repel it, if we would secure the peace it must be known that we are at all times ready for war."

David O McKay in Gospel Ideals wrote:

"Force rules in the world today, consequently, our government must keep armies abroad, build navies and air squadrons, create atom bombs to protect itself from the threatened aggression of a nation which seems to listen to no other appeal than compulsion."

The forces of good and evil on this earth have been at war since the Council in Heaven. We need to keep up the good fight.

Another enemy that we find rampant in the world is communism and other forms of socialism. This is the welfare state. This is the government that controls the people. This is the kind of government that is promoted by liberalism. Liberals want to tell you how to live your life and force you to live their lifestyle. They want to tell you that the terrorists are simply misunderstood and not evil, rather that it was our fault. Liberals think they are smarter than you and I, that if we give them more money in the form of taxes they can spend it better. They can help the needy better. This is just socialism - welfare, state run health care, environmental watchdogs, etc. It doesn't matter how right the cause is, or how badly people need the help, it is evil to remove freedoms. It is Satan's counterfeit plan. And it is destroying liberties at a rapid pace. In the 1920s through the 1970s the leaders of the LDS Church such as David O McKay, Ezra Taft Benson, and Bruce R McConkie spoke out against communism and socialism. They stated that they were secret combinations and that no LDS person should have any part in them.

What are your views on socialism? Do you agree that liberalism is just another form of socialism?

Here, Here!!!! What the liberals are promoting IS communism and socialism in all its splender. What is crazy is that they do not even try to hide it anymore, they may not call it communism, but if you read the communist manifesto, it is basically the liberals playbook right now. And
OBAMA is thier biggest promoter at this time.

I don't think all liberals are communist or socialist just as I don't think all Latter-Day Saints should be Republican (a party with flaws all its own--although I am currently a registered Republican). I vote for people not parties and groups...

I find it interesting to note that when we read the scriptures and talks by the prophets that although some of it applies directly to the country we live in, not all of it does. It is important to remember that the Lord's church is a worldwide church, that there are members living in non-democratic nations and who are oppressed.

We had a great talk in sacrament meeting this last Sunday about how we can all be individual standards of liberty through the way we live. A lot of it came from a talk by Elder Didier (did I spell that right?) which I don't remember the title of unfortunately.

Jefferson was pretty liberal in my opinion and so were a handful of other great presidents of our time.

Bottom line--I can see where you are coming from but don't agree whole-heartedly. One thing I know for sure is that this nation is a wonderful place to live, we are blessed beyond measure, and that when we live the gospel and get involved in a positive way in our communities, etc. we will be taken care of. I'm glad you care passionately about America, Dan! :)

Becky, I am not talking about party lines, I know a lot of liberal Republicans. The talks that I quoted were specifically given to the Church in the US. At the time the church was very limited outside the United States.

I am stating that we need to be careful as liberalism is socialism - they even admit it now, they used to hide it. They are bolder now. They want a welfare state, state controlled health care, etc. Those are SOCIALIST and they are coercion. Like the frog in the boiling pot if we aren't careful we won't notice the temperature rising.

The First Presidency in the early 20th century called communism and socialism secret combinations, Antichrist, and even said that the warnings of the Book of Mormon of such in the last days applied to them. They went as far as to call them Gadianton Robbers.

I realize that this is a great country, the greatest in fact. Democracy and freedom exist in the world because of that. We are the last bastion of hope for the free world. Terrorism and socialism threaten at every turn.

Much of what I posted was paraphrased from a talk given by Ezra Taft Benson in the which he quoted McKay and other First Presidency letters to the church.

I care about our country and I want to help return it to the inspired document that it was founded on. Many of the founders had liberal views but the document, the Constitution, was inspired.

I would like to also add a link and a few comments. There are other references but I don't want to overdue it.

This is a conference talk by Ezra Taft Benson in 1979. More recent than the other talks I quoted but still similar. In it he talks about communism. I am not calling liberals communists and all liberals vary in intensity and convictions - it is the ideals I am fighting.

This line is from the talk "Communism introduced into the world a substitute for true religion. It is a counterfeit of the gospel plan. The false prophets of Communism predict a utopian society. This, they proclaim, will only be brought about as capitalism and free enterprise are overthrown, private property abolished, the family as a social unit eliminated, all classes abolished, all governments overthrown, and a communal ownership of property in a classless, stateless society established."

Many of these goals fit hand in hand with the liberal agenda, especially the far left. It also fits well with terrorists agendas.

Here is the link to the talk: A Witness and a Warning

He also states that freedom is under attack like never before - this was 29 years ago. The battle is more intense and the enemy uses both bold and subtle tactics.
